DNA EXTRACTION

The Senior class is studying the DNA structure and to be able to observe strands of DNA a laboratory practice was designed. It consisted on extracting DNA from a piece of a fruit. The DNA extraction in fruit or vegetables is another way to demonstrate the presence of DNA in living things with simple techniques.

Besides this experiment permits to see the fibrillar structure of DNA in a practical and easy way. First of all, the fruit is ground along with a pinch of salt and cold water to separate individual cells and help the DNA to stick together.

Then, the mixture is strained and mixed with soap to break membranes in the cell. Finally, the mixture is placed in a test tube and ethyl alcohol is slowly added, and as a result the strands of DNA float to the top of the alcohol.
